Day 10: Uffda (Norwegian for OMG!)--Cathedrals and Drama

Today started out lovely.  We got up at 5:30 to be ready to depart the ship at 6:30 to visit Trondheim.  Trondheim was the capital of Norway a thousand years ago and a center for science and technology.

We had a great breakfast overlooking the water--the scenery is still awesome.

Connie really wanted to see the famous Cathedral and we didn't have to be back at the boat until 10AM. Since it was only a 30 minute walk, we strolled over to see it.  On the way we saw a cute little bird, a White Wagtail.

The Nidaros Cathedral is quite impressive.  It's the burial site of King Olaf, the Viking who introduced Christianity to Norway.

The front of the Cathedral has amazing carvings.

All of a sudden, we looked at the clock at it was 9:40.  We started running  to the ship and when we got there it was pulling away and the gangway was up.  We were screaming to the people on deck and the captain pulled back in and lowered the gangway to let us in.  We were REALLY lucky or REALLY stupid.  Everyone on the boat has commented that they saw us yelling.  This picture is what we thought would happen with the two of us standing on the dock.

Once we got back on the ship we were kind-of able to enjoy the the beautiful scenery of Trondheim.

We are staying on board until we get to Bergen since we had such a close call.
