Day 9: Vega Archipelago

Today we took a small boat out to the Vega Archipelago just below the Arctic Circle. It's a series of 6,500 islands and uninhabitable out-croppings of rock.  It's a UNESCO world heritage site based on the generations of fisherman/farmers who maintained a sustainable style of living in an inhospitable environment.

On the way out, the guide pointed out the importance of fish farms to the Norwegian economy.  We've seen them in fjords and open water.

We got off at Vega Island, the biggest in the archipelago.  We took a tour of the Eider Duck Museum, which showed us the nesting habits and human-eider interactions that keep the species viable.  They use down from the nest to make comforters that sell $5,000 apiece.  It's a special kind of down, with no hard parts and it locks together like velcro.  Apparently these are passed down from generation to generation and can last over 100 years.

We took a ferry from Vega Island back to Brønnøysund and got back on the big ship.

A little ways out of Brønnøysund, we came across the Torghatten--a mountain with a hole in because of the glaciers.

Today is a pretty relaxing day.  We're going to veg in one the lounges and wait for dinner. We have had lefse both last night & today. Yum!!! Mitzi likes it right off the grill!!!
